Advancing with Co-Processing

Co-Processing

A technology that can increase the product quality and makes the products more sustainable at the same time.

Co-processing is a key technology that enables us to supply you with more sustainable fuels, with properties equivalent to, or sometimes even better than, conventional fossil fuels. Thus, supporting you in decreasing your CO2 footprint without compromising on quality – making your operations even more future ready.

OMV is among the first companies in Europe to implement co-processing at an industrial scale.

In the traditional production pathway, renewable components and fossil fuels are produced separately. After production, the bio components are blended (mixed) with the fossil fuel to create a final product. This method introduces renewable content only at the end of the production process.

Co-processing, by contrast, integrates renewable feedstocks earlier in the refinery process, meaning that the renewable and the fossil components are “processed together” in an existing refinery hydrotreatment unit.

Did you know?

To enable co‑processing in our refinery in Schwechat (Austria), an existing hydrogenation unit was converted into a dedicated co‑processing facility. As part of this transformation, a 35‑meter‑high reactor, a 40‑meter‑high column, 500 pipelines, and 800 tons of steel were installed.

The Advantages of Co-Processing

  • Efficient integration of high-quality biofuel production into the refining process
  • Flexible use of sustainable raw materials, from domestic rapeseed oil and used cooking oil to promising algae oil
  • High quality fuel with properties equivalent to, or sometimes even better than, conventional fossil fuels
  • Important contribution to increase the share of renewable energy in mobility
